Why Writing for a Target Audience Is Still a Winning Strategy

The initial work feels daunting, but the rewards could be huge

As an indie writer, here are the two ways to attract readers to your work.

  1. Write personal stories that your loyal readers have come to love over the years.
  2. Dig deep into the life of your ideal reader and write about what bothers them.

Sure, you can also write about trending topics and celebrity gossip. There’ll always be something/someone in the trends. But you don’t want to risk leaving your writing ideas in the hands of newsmakers.

I’d rather be in complete control of what I write and when I write most of my content. Anyways.

Over the years, I’ve written a mix of personal and audience-targeted stories. My personal stories only worked after I built a semblance of an audience. They knew my story and could easily keep track of the goings-on in my life.

Conversely, I’ve also done a few blog posts targeted at an audience more so than sharing my personal stories. My goal was to attract a particular reader by writing about them, for them.

This style worked for me even when I had no semblance of a loyal following.
