A friend shared his frustrations and dared me to write about him

My friend, I’ll call him Jared, swears we’ve been sold a lie. Or at least he believed a lie. Or maybe, just maybe, things have not yet worked for him as he’d hoped.

He built his writing hopes on the foundations of possibilities others sold him. The high-paying clients, the four-figure months, and the 6-figure years are still yet to come.

As for pitching those dream publications, he’s given that option a wide berth after several zero-feedback pitches. So far, so bad. None of those highlights have happened to him yet.

Look, this is in no way scoffing at those claims — they’re targets many writers hit and exceed all the time. But the only problem is that not every writer will hit those highs.

And like my friend, many have waited for those pieces to fall in place. Thus far, no luck.

No LinkedIn or Twitter DM yet

He’d dreamed of getting that life-changing DM on Twitter, where an editor saw an interesting tweet and started the conversation. Then the conversation leads to a writing gig someday. Or a warm relationship, for starters.
